Unser neuer Fremdsprachenassistent – Welcome Reece!
Hi, I’m Reece McCarthy, and I’m excited to assist at NEG this coming school year! I’ll be working in the English department as a Fremdsprachenassistent (FSA) through a Fulbright grant.
I’m 22 years old and originally from Aiken, South Carolina, USA, a small city in the southeast of the US known for its horses and warm, sunny weather! I completed my bachelor’s in International Affairs and German at Wofford College, also located in South Carolina. During this time, I studied abroad in Berlin for a semester, which I enjoyed so much that I decided to return to Germany.
At NEG, I’ll be helping out in English classes across different grades, and I’ll also be reachable during DALTON time, so if any students would like extra practice speaking English, I’m more than happy to help! As a native speaker, I hope to help students build confidence in speaking English and share some insight into American culture and how everyday life in the US compares to life in Germany.
I’ve been learning German for about 7 years now, and although I still find it challenging at times, my goal is to become fluent (C1) in German by the end of the year. I also hope to leverage my experience in learning German to lead by example and show students that making mistakes is a normal part of learning and that I’m still on that journey as well.
So far, everyone at NEG has been so welcoming and helpful, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the students and teachers. Outside of school, I’m excited to explore North Rhine-Westphalia, the rest of Germany, and beyond. I plan to make the most of my Deutschland-Ticket by traveling on the weekends, and I’ve already visited Köln, Düsseldorf, Ronsdorf, Leipzig, and Bielefeld! In my free time, I enjoy reading, going to the gym, running, and jiu-jitsu, and I’d love to find a local jiu-jitsu club while I’m here.
I’ll be at NEG until June 2027, and I’m really looking forward to working with the students and supporting them in their English learning journey!
